Isaiah's Story

Earlier this year I got a phone call at midnight from an old youth leader of mine in Springfield, Illinois. I shouldn't have been surprised. My temple-going, scripture reading gem of husband had been telling me for 3-4 months that we needed to get ready for a baby. I was in less of a hurry - especially since I had called the California agency we used with Juliette, and they told me I was in for a minimum 2 year wait - 3 if we wanted to wait for a boy who shared our oldest sons African American heritage. We had just decided to list with them anyway, and not wait for any specific gender or ethnic background. And then the phone rang.

And then we met an amazing woman named Autumn. Her first adoptive family had withdrawn from the match, and 34 weeks pregnant and panicking, she knelt and prayed desperately for help. Then she called her friend and coworker, Jess. Who called my former youth leader. Who called me. When Autumn woke up the next morning after she prayed, it was to a message asking if she would consider us as a family for her child. We drove up the next day to meet her. It felt as if we had been friends forever.

We are all of us so in love with Isaiah - he has SEVEN birth half-siblings who were thrilled to meet and hold him, and love to shower him with drawings and cuddles every time we go back to visit. One of my favorite events with Isaiah's birth family has been hauling everyone into the JCPenney Portraits Studio for an "extended family" photo shoot - with Isaiah's birth Grandpa now seriously ill those photos are some of our prize possessions.

Isaiah loves music and dancing, chasing his siblings around the house and riding his trike. He has brought so much light and happiness and joy into this world, we are astonished. But, then, we should know by now, that God's plan for our family is AWESOME - in every sense of the word.
